Samac Steel Supplies is a leading independent importer and distributor of steel in the UK and Ireland.

Established in the 1930s, Samac was originally an importer of timber and in the 1950s began to import steel from Eastern Europe. In the 1980s Samac expanded by acquiring several steel stockholders and service centres. In 1991, the diversified parts of the group were divested and Samac Steel Supplies plc was established to focus purely on the import of steel, particularly from Eastern Europe. The company grew steadily over seven years and in 1998 was acquired by Stemcor, the world’s largest independent steel trader. Julian Verden retained the role of managing director at Samac and joined the Stemcor Board of Directors. As part of Stemcor, Samac has continued to grow and is now a major player in the UK steel market for stripmill and plate products, serving independent steel stockholders and service centres.
